PotashCorp's MineA fire was reported at a Saskatchewan potash mine owned by PotashCorp, which allegedly had 20 workers trapped in the underground field area. Potash Corporation officially disclosed that the fire had ignited at exactly 1:56 a.m. CST on Tuesday at their Rocanville mine. PotashCorp’s manager of public affairs, Bill Cooper, confirmed the authorities that there are 20 miners trapped underground but they can fully communicate with rest of the world and are not in immediate danger.

After several attempts of the mine rescue teams and fire extinguishers the fire has been put out. Cooper stated that "Putting a fire out in a mine is much different than putting one out above ground." He explained that "You have to consider the safety of your employees underground and your mine teams and you move as quickly as you can in a safe manner."

Originally there were 29 people underground at the time of fire, but nine were successfully lifted out quickly enough. Cooper has confirmed that the remaining 20 workers have taken refuge in three separate refuge stations which are totally conserved from the outer conditions of the mine and have easy approach to supplies of several days. Cooper has declared that “As far as we know all of our employees are safe and there haven’t been any reported injuries.” He further disclosed that the cause of fire has not been traced as yet, but it is suspected that large wooden spool might have been involved in the ignition.
