World Health Organization has already made a recent announced spreading awareness about a new coronavirus being discovered in a critically ill Qatari man being treated in London along with another case of a Saudi Arabian man who passed away few months ago. Now the genetic sequencing of the two cases of viruses has confirmed them to be almost identical.

WHO officials have cautioned all the doctors to keep an eye on all new cases of such virus related to SARS. It was also clarified at the same time that, as yet, there have been no sign of the virus spreading to a killer degree like the respiratory syndrome which led to hundreds of deaths in 2003.

A WHO spokesman, Gregory Hartl, stated on Thursday that the two cases have perhaps directly been caused by animals and there is no proof that this could be a human to human spread. This newly discovered coronavirus stems from a family of viruses which can also cause common cold along with SARS. Though, unlike SARS, this new virus additionally might also cause a rapid kidney failure, which is not a common problem in respiratory viruses. The Qatari patient in London is also under a treatment involving an artificial lung machine.

Hartl stated that WHO is constantly observing all the reports of any suspicious case related to the new virus but there have not been a new case so far. W.H.O. has published a case definition defining the new virus hoping to aid worldwide doctors to identify the cases easily.

  1. It makes no sense to wait for human deaths before starting to look for animal disease. Better if health officials found the disease in animals first and controlled itthere, so it does not spread to people. Much cheaper, too.
