The Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, Joe Oliver, allegedly communicated to his officials, almost six months past being appointed as Minister, that he does not “know very much” about energy projects. These statements were revealed from an internal email conversation within the company, which showed Oliver asking for proper briefing so he could end up communicating “knowledgeably” on the subject.

It was also mentioned by Oliver that he is extremely unhappy with “full thrust” of comments from former Environment Minister, Jim Prentice, for cleaning up the oilsands industry. These confidential documents were publicly revealed by a media organization which gained access to information legislation. Such conversations of Oliver have led many to believe whether Joe Oliver, a Toronto MP and the lead Federal Minister on Energy Issues, is on top of his portfolio.

In response to the allegations, Oliver’s office stated that the emails “speak for themselves.” It was further mentioned that the government was committed to “responsible development of Canada’s resources to create jobs.”

The email sent by Oliver to the Deputy Minister of his department, Serge Dupont, on Nov. 28, 2011, mentioned that “Jim Prentice’s speech has a lot of facts about energy projects, including the Northwest Upgrader, which I do not know very much about.” It said that “It would be useful for me to have someone do a review of the projects he mentions so that I am up to date on developments and can talk knowledgeably about what is going on, who is involved and the implications for regulatory review, jobs and economic growth.”
