The controversial mayor of Montreal, who only a couple of days ago declared he wouldn’t hide from the ongoing corruption inquiry, has announced to have decided to take a break from his civic duties.

Mayor Gérald Tremblay decided on Thursday that he is going to take a few days of rest. He suddenly abandoned all the public events scheduled for him after a witness at Quebec’s corruption inquiry gave a clear testimony directly involving the mayor and alleging him to be aware of his illegal party spending.

Just this Tuesday, when the mayor presented the city’s budget, he declared out of irritation to the reporters throwing questions about his resignation, that “I’m not going to hide, I’m present, I’m not sick, I will continue to manage the city.” Since the inquiry has begun Mr. Tremblay has kept the same stance that he has nothing to say about the allegations of conspiracy and bribery made against him or his city, even when he’s also said corruption has always been present.

On the other hand Charbonneau Commission was informed by a retired city engineer, Luc Leclerc, on Thursday, that public works department was already fulfilled with desirable gifts and graft from the construction companies even before his arrival since 1990. Leclerc stated that “I think it was generations it went like that.” He mentioned that “I hadn’t even arrived yet and I was invited to my first golf tournament. I was taken aback.”
