One of the Canada’s most influential medical journals has attributed in a special article that newly proposed Canadian bill for crime is certainly going to increase more physical and mental “degradation” among the prisoners and reduce the chances of their reintegration back into society.

The Safe Streets and Communities Act, Bill C-1o, of the Conservatives states that it is necessary to increase smallest sentences and alter the eligibility criteria for conditional sentences. Faculty members of law at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., Adelina Iftene and Allan Manson, inscribed in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that this bill will unavoidably generate more prisoners serving longer prison sentences.

They claimed that the impact of this bill will be a dramatic increase in already overcrowded prisons, “more stress, more volatility and the likelihood of more violence,” along with inflation in number of hepatitis, HIV and other infectious diseases. Manson stated in an interview that “from both an ethical and public safety perspective, one needs to consider a simple fact.”

Manson and Iftene wrote in CMAJ that “the intrinsic difficulties of reintegration after a period of incarceration should not be compounded by physical and mental health challenges.” It said “we’re in an era where jails are becoming the asylums of the past for many people with mental health problems.” It was further mentioned in the article “and that continues to be an issue after someone is released from jail. “People with mental health problems sometimes experience difficulty in conforming their behaviour to commonly accepted standards.”
