The Transport Minister of Canada, Denis Lebel, has declared that now the road to building the new international bridge over the Detroit River between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit is clear and there is nothing to stop them back.
The voters of Michigan have sent a clear message during the night of U.S. election that they do not want to weigh in on whether any new bridge should be built between their state and Canada. The voters outnumbered the Proposal 6, which was going to ask for a statewide vote on whether to build a new international crossing bridge, including a proposed new bridge that would link Windsor, Ont., to Detroit. A majority of more than 60 per cent rejected the proposal that was being ingrained in the state’s Constitution.
Lebel claimed that now the authorities can get on with the bridge construction “as soon as possible.” He claimed that “we’re waiting now for a presidential permit. As soon as we can, we will move forward.” Lebel was in Ottawa on Wednesday, when he asserted that “we will continue to work with President Obama to get the necessary presidential permit to allow the bridge to succeed.”
The Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, commented on the decision from his tour in India, saying that “we’re very pleased to see the support of the people of Michigan for the new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, which is very important to the economies of both our countries,” he said. “I look forward, in particular, to working with [President Barack Obama] on the Beyond the Border initiative, which is obviously very important for the opportunities for Canadians and Americans going forward.”
