The Philippine have now grown to be the largest source of immigrants to Canada, also making Tagalog the fastest growing second language of the country.

Majority of the Filipino-Canadian community were hoping that the joyous and rare visit of Harper to Philippines will address some issues related to the labor and other foreign temporary workers from Philippines, who have settled in Canada. The workers are so far totally dependent on their sponsoring employers to be responsible of their contract, which raises big questions of labor abuses going unreported.

Harper failed to mention anything on the particular topic on any of his comments during the visit, President Aquino, however, did inform the media that the topic was discussed during the meeting held on Saturday at the Malacanan Palace. Aquino stated that “overseas Filipinos are Canada’s largest source of migrant workers. It is only right that our countries work together in order to better guarantee the protection and welfare of our Filipino migrant workers and to ensure that the labour requirements of Canada are met.”

Canada has announced that it will be spending a sum of $15.5 million in funds of the next four years for supporting the job training of young people in the Philippines, along with streamlining the regulations around infrastructure projects. During his visit to Philippines, Harper visited some places of downtown Manila, taking part in a wreath-laying at a monument to nationalist hero Jose Rizal, and touring the Spanish fortress in the old part of town.
