A 30-year-old man was dashed to the hospital after suffering from serious burns due to an early morning fire on Queen St. W. near Spadina Ave. The two-alarm fire began sometime around 6:20 a.m. on the third-floor apartment right above Jacobs Hardware store near Cameron St., i.e. adjacent to the Cameron House bar.

The Toronto Fire district Chief, Dan Sell, explained that another tenant of the building rescued the victim from his room and brought him down to the entranceway.  Sell stated that “when I arrived, he was sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building.” He explained that “flesh was falling off him. He was burned pretty badly.” Two other victims, who had managed to escape from the fire with only few injuries, were also treated at the scene by paramedics.

Firefighters took control of the fire within 10 minutes, and later led a secondary search for spot fires. It is generally estimated that the fire must have caused almost $150,000 in damage. The fire is being investigated by the Ontario Fire Marshal, though so far the reports are only indicating that it was electrical in nature.

Sell pointed out that “preliminary investigation indicated it was overloaded electrical wiring that caused heavy charring in one corner of the room, and the fire then spread to the rest of the room, including person’s bed.” The surrounding streets in the area have since been opened up and streetcar service has resumed.
