The Federal Intergovernmental Affairs Minister, Peter Penashue, had intended to inform his constituents on Tuesday about his campaign overspending, but it turns out, Labrador staff is not informed.
The assistant in Penashue’s constituency office in L’Anse au Loup, N.L, Agatha Ryland stated that “I don’t know anything about it.” Ryland claimed during a phone interview that Penashue was travelling the remote Labrador coast for distributing several Queens’ Diamond Jubilee medals for community service and achievement.
The spokesman of Penashue, Cory Hann, was not available on his email or cellphone, and neither did the minister’s Ottawa office give any reply. The Conservative MP of Labrador has attributed his rookie mistakes to be the reason for spending thousands of dollars on his 2011 election campaign, and hence surpassing the legal limit. He is being questioned for weeks in the House of Commons, as the opposition accuses him of accepting free flights around his large riding along with a suspicious donation from executives of a St. John’s construction company.
Penashue promised last week in Ottawa that he is going to come clean to his constituents on Tuesday before giving up any further explanation to the press. Hann did not did not give any details of that promised update, but informed that the minister does not plans to speak with the reporters on Tuesday. Penashue’s victory with 79 votes over the Liberal incumbent Todd Russell was the only Conservative win in the province. Penashue bluntly assured that he does not plan to resign despite calls from the opposition for a byelection and accusations that he “bought” the election.
