Surprising new reports have estimated that every eight in ten adults have given a charitable donation this year, which is a 10 per cent increment from last year. Furthermore, the report shows that not only are more people giving, but they’re also giving more.

The report was published by the BMO Harris Private Banking, which states till the National Philanthropy Day on Nov. 15, the average donation total was raised from $487 to $557 in the past 12 months. The Managing Director of Philanthropic Services for BMO Harris Private Banking, Marvi Ricker, attributed that “people are very nervous about the economy, and we’re being told that Canadians are in debt at higher levels than they’ve ever been. So I was surprised and delighted to see that the (giving) figures have all gone up.” He said that “I put it down to the sense that people are trying to do what they can for people who are hurting.”

Ontario was the leading city of the country in philanthropy, having the highest percentage of adults who made the donation, i.e. 85 per cent, along with the highest average of amount given i.e. $778. The Prairies were the second to follow, with 84 per cent of adults donating, with an average donation total of $751. Ricker said that “If you know what you want to achieve, you’ll get so much more bang for your buck – both in terms of seeing an impact and in feeling as though you’re making a difference.”
