A plane crash on Sunday resulted in the death of a pilot, along with seven injured passengers near Snow Lake, i.e. the community often called Manitoba’s next northern boom town.

The emergency call was made to the authorities sometime around 10 a.m. by a passenger aboard, who reported that the plane had crashed near Snow Lake. Gogal Air Services of Snow Lake was the company owning the plane, whereas the pilot’s identity was kept a secret by the RCMP. The people of the town, however, assert that a 40-years-old Mark Gogal, i.e. the son of company owner Larry Gogal, was killed in the place crash. A witness from Snow Lake named David stated that “everyone’s in shock here” and “It’s something we’ve never dealt with here before. Everyone’s very upset.”

The plane was a single-engine turboprop Cessna 208 Caravan that has a capacity of 14 people. Logs indicate that the plane was scheduled to leave from Snow Lake to Winnipeg. The plane crashed into the bushes, almost two kilometres east of Snow Lake Airport. The passengers aboard with the pilot were contractors from Dumas Mine Contracting. Dumas is digging a shaft for the new Lalor Mine just outside Snow Lake, 685 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

Several paramedics, RCMP, fire officials and numerous volunteer organizations attended the scene. RCMP Staff Sgt. Line Karpish acclaimed that “they had to cut their way in” so “the rescue efforts have been very difficult. This is in the middle of nowhere, for all intents and purposes.”
