The front-runner of the upcoming Calgary Centre by-election, Conservative Party candidate, Joan Crockatt, was absent at the Sunday’s all-candidates debate session which has now led to sever criticism.

The issue has aggravated numerous people including Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. After expressing her disappointment over Crockatt’s plans last week to not participate, Nenshi now asserted jokingly that the attendance issue was “the elephant not in the room.” Nenshi claimed that Crockatt Tweeted to him at 1 a.m. that she hopes that she would talk about the good things the Conservatives had done for cities. However, Nenshi claims “I said to her, ‘Gee, you could come and tell them yourself.’ I don’t think it’s the mayor’s job to do the candidate’s work for her.”

The competing NDP candidate, Dan Meades, used his debate as an opening for making a point why Conservatives shall not be elected in Calgary. Meades blamed that “we don’t see them between elections. In fact, we don’t even see them during elections either,” while taking a shot at Crockatt, which made the entire audience laugh. Nenshi responded on Twitter by saying that it was a good line, but that it was slightly unfair to the MPs in question.

Crockatt has stated publicly that she had prior campaign commitments that kept her from the forum. While Crockett was absent at the controversial debate of Sunday, she was at another interview forum where she answered questions about CBC funding and U.S. investment in Alberta. Calgary Centre voters will begin casting their votes in polls on November 26.
