The mayor of London, Ont., has been indicted for fraud by the RCMP after an investigation of the allegations against him for misusing public funds in 2005 during his time as a Member of Parliament. It was officially announced by the RCMP in a news release on Wednesday that Joe Fontana is being indicted with three different charges including fraud, breach of trust by a public official and uttering forged documents.

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, anyone who intestinally uses, deals with or acts on a document knowingly that it’s forged or causes another person to do so is acting against the law. An October issue of London Free Press published an article accusing former federal cabinet minister of using more than $20,000 of federal government money for paying off the expenses of his son’s wedding reception in 2005. Fontana was the Liberal MP for London North Centre at the time.

The RCMP declared that it was approached by the House of Commons in October for investigating the alleged inappropriate use of funds by Fontana. Fontana posted on his website, soon after the issue was being investigated by the RCMP, that he will remain in counsel and instruct them to co-operate with the review. Fontana also acknowledged that he is strictly advised for not making any further public comment until the review was completed. Fontana has clearly denied all the accusations. He is now scheduled appear at the London Provincial Court House on Jan. 8, 2013.
