The Mayor of London, Ont., Joe Fontana has made his important announcement at the 1 P.M. on Thursday, declaring that he has no plans of giving up his position, and alleged that he is completely innocent of all three criminal charges laid against him.

Fontana bluntly addressed all the media present in the press conference on Thursday, saying that “I’m innocent of all of these charges and I intend to fight as hard as I can to clear my name.” The former Liberal cabinet minister had already freely submitted himself to the RCMP on Wednesday and so was indicted with charges of fraud of $5,000, breach of trust by a public officer and uttering forged documents. Fontana was released today, until the next court date in January.

The RCMP has stated that charges against Fontana are of inappropriate use of funds in 2005, when Fontana was a federal Liberal cabinet minister. Fontana stated that has resigned from the London Police Services Board, but alleged that he feels he is elected mayor to do a job and so plans to continue to doing so. He stated that “today I am telling you I was given a mandate, a responsibility, and an obligation to lead the city, to work with my colleagues, to work with the community to create that great city we all want.”  He added that “we’ve accomplished a lot in the last two years and we can accomplish a lot more in the next two.” Fontana’s lawyer, Gord Cudmore, also stated that “I believe my client to be innocent,” and that I’ve advised Fontana not to comment on the matter any further.
