A man, who was assaulted viciously in public while aboard an Edmonton LRT train on last Friday, recently passed away in the hospital. One of the many witnesses, Scott McLeod, stated that “It looked like just some little scrap between two people … but then it kind of escalated. One guy was, like, telling the other one ‘stop, stop, stop, stop.’

The Police was informed and reached the Clareview Station sometime around 2 p.m on Friday. Homicide Det. Colin Derkson stated that 29-years-old John Hollar was being assaulted by another man while the train stopped at Belvedere station, though the two men remained on-board.  Director of operational support for Edmonton Transit, Ron Gabruck, confirmed that “the doors closed. The suspect was still assaulting the victim.” Hence it was decided to let the train reach next station, that was 3 minutes away, where police will be able to easily handle the situation. Though by the time the train arrived, Hollar was already unconscious and the suspect was running from the scene.

Derkson explained that “the driver is the person actually who came out and flagged down the first police officer, and then they ran together and he was able to point him out.” He added that “If it wasn’t for the great teamwork … we probably would not have found [the suspect], certainly not that quickly. And it’s possible we would not have been able to identify him.” Hollar remained in critical condition at the hospital for two days, after which he died today. The charges levied on 29-years-old Jeremy Newborn have been upgraded from aggravated assault to second-degree murder.
