It has been almost five days past the record-breaking storm which covered entire Montreal in snow and now the city officials claim to have finish almost half of their cleanup process. The spokesperson of Montreal, Jacques-Alain Lavallée, alleged today almost 48 per cent of the city is clear of snow. He urged residents to remain patient, and shed light on the fact that the city has more than 10,000 kilometers of sidewalks and roads, which has made the snow removal process a bigger task than expected.

The city management has set its target to clean up all the streets at least up till Jan. 7, which is the time when the majority of Montrealers are expected to return at work after the holidays. The process of snow removal will resume today in the downtown Ville-Marie borough, where the workers  took a break from work. City workers operating heavy machinery are allowed to take a 36 hour break from work, as per a provincial law, once they have worked for more than 70 hours in a week or less.

Lavallée requested for public’s cooperation during the snow removal process, asking the drivers to remain cautious and obey the signs posted today on city streets in the downtown area. City workers of other areas including Lachine, LaSalle, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Outremont, Pierrefonds-Roxboro, and the Plateau Mont-Royal, have already taken advantage of their mandatory break and are expected to return at work overnight. The city also took time today to commend the work of all its employees working tirelessly to clear roads and sidewalks.
