The steeply growing aboriginal movement, often labeled as ‘Idle No More Campaign’ has spread to various countries even beyond Canada as of Tuesday.

One of the key leaders spearheading the movement, Pamela Palmater, visited Washington, D.C., in a recent media tour for giving interviews to the U.S. press. She claims that the actual purpose of her media campaign is to raise awareness and gather international support to force Prime Minister Stephen Harper for responding the situation. Palmater mentioned during a phone interview that “the idea is to put pressure on the Canadian government to pay attention and come to the table.” She elaborated that “I was invited to come down and do some media about Idle No More, basically answer questions about why it’s spreading into the United States.”

Rallies have also been organized recently in many places including Texas, Hawaii and New Zealand. Palmater pointed out that Chief Theresa Spence’s hunger strike has reached fourth week and now the movement, ignited in response to the federal government’s omnibus budget legislation, has grown much larger. She added that “we did letter writing and phone calls and trying to talk to MPs and, you know, we took that route and it didn’t work.” She further explained that “then we had to move up to peaceful marches and rallies, and that didn’t work. So now we’re doing all these flash mob round dances, which are more about working hand in hand with Canadians and also keeping the focus on the media. But now you see blockades.”
