Canada’s winning-streak of scoring consecutive medals at the world junior hockey championship has ended with an extremely unlucky loss of 6-5 loss against Russia for the third place, i.e. bronze-medal, game on Saturday. Canada has never returned home without winning any title, i.e. at least third place, since 1998, when Canada returned from Finland without a medal in the tournament.

Audience of 7,617 gathered at UFA Arena, Russia, witnessed Valerie Nichushkin score the winning point during overtime at 1:35. Next game in the tournament will take place between the defending world champion, Sweden, and its number one contender for the gold medal, the U.S. The first words spoken after the shameful loss from the players’ mouths were that its “unacceptable” to have not won any medal after 14 straight years, coach Steve Spott stated that “fourth place for Canada is unacceptable.” Spott mentioned that “unfortunately that’s something we’re going to have to deal with and we’re all going to have to answer questions too. Today was a tough game. I thought our players played extremely hard, but at the end of the day when you look at the big picture, the end result is unacceptable for our country.”

During the preliminary round, Canada was ranked top in their pool with a 4-0 record, after which it lost two consecutive matches to the countries it had already beaten in the preliminary round. The U.S. defeated Canada 5-1 in the semifinal, while now Russia won against Canada also with 6-5 victory.
