The ambassador of Haiti to Canada claims that he is stunned to hear Friday’s announcement about the Conservative government freezing the funding committed for new aid projects in the Caribbean country. Frantz Liautaud declared that the Canadian government had been reviewing the implementation of funds in Haiti since July, as it almost supplied $1 billion through aid for the development of the poverty-stricken nation since 2006, but now it claims to have found few visible results.

Haitian ambassador alleges that he got knowledge of the news by reading the comments of International Development Minister, Julian Fantino, about the funding being froze. Canada has remained to be one of largest donor for Haiti, distributing around $100 million per year for emergency food supplies, health care and education for children, and rehabilitation of the Caribbean nation’s weak government institutions.

The announcement of Fantino elaborated that funding of current projects will carry on, although due to the lack of progress in overcoming Haiti’s widespread poverty Canada is forced for a review, until which any new initiatives will be kept on hold. His statement asserted that “the fact is that Haiti is still in poor condition” and “will we continue to do the same thing in the same way in Haiti? I think not. Because we are not getting the progress that Canadians are entitled to expect.”  He elaborated that “Canada remains concerned with the slow progress of development in Haiti due to its weak governing institutions and corruption.”
