The conflict of interest case, which will decide where Rob Ford will remain in office or be suspended, is going to begin today as a panel of judges hear an appeal filed in November. This is the same case which had the mayor of Toronto suspended from office, though later the mayor sought and won a stay against the decision allowing him to remain in office until and unless the appeal is heard and a decision is pronounced.

The complaint was filed by a resident of Toronto, who demanded court to remove Ford from office, because he has explicitly violated the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act. The filing stated that Ford addressed and voted on a decision that was in his financial interest, namely a motion allowing Ford to repay $3,150 through donations to his football charity. Justice Charles T. Hackland of Ontario Superior Court ruled in November that Ford has indeed broken conflict of interest rules and ordered him to vacate his offices in several days. Now, Ford is going to appear in court on Monday for his hearing before three divisional court judges, whereas a decision is anticipated later in early February.

In case the mayor loses his appeal, city council might have to decide whether to arrange byelection or nominate a substitute to takeover for the remaining term of two years. Meanwhile, Mayor Ford has kept a low profile over the weekend. He was last in public seen at a ski hill north of the city, where he alleged that I’m “just going to keep running the city like I’ve been doing.” He also mentioned “we’ll see what happens. It’s out of my hands. It’s up to the judges to decide. I will be there.”
