The coach of Maple Leafs, Randy Carlyle, has announced his plan of immediately beginning preparations of his team for the shortened NHL season announced on Sunday, according to which he declared to have made a smaller selection of only 30 players to practice in camp. The camp might begin on Saturday, while instead of the routinely selected almost 55 to 60 players, the Leafs are intending cut it short and to the point, as the league is anticipated to kick start on Jan. 19.

Carlyle made the announcement on Monday morning, informing media that “we should be around or under 30 players, that’s a guesstimate for now, but the potential is there to have a team together for a very short period before playing (regular season games).” He further elaborated that he is confident to allow Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul play together on the same line, while refraining to disclose any other information. Though he did answer an inquiry regard a newcomer, James Van Rymsdyk, disclosing that he will start the season on the wing. He alleged that “there will be a chance at some point that he moves over to centre, but we plan to use him on the wing to open the season.”

Speaking of the team’s Defenceman, Jake Gardiner, who is suffering from a head injury while playing with the Marlies last month, Carlyle mentioned that “his progress in terms of a percentage is 75, 80, even 90 per cent, he’s doing off ice workouts now and hopefully he will be available to us at the start of camp.”
