Back in 2004, Canadian authorities put AshkanForsat on a flight to Tehran, assuming they have successfully freed themselves of the 26-year-old Iranian who was holding up convenience stores almost since the time he entered Canada. But now almost nine years have passed since then and Forsatstill remains in Canada, while the expense sheet of supporting him gets longer, immigration authorities keep attempting to figure out a method of getting rid of the man Iranian authorities refuse to take back.

The Immigration and Refugee Board Commissioner, Louis Dubé, mentioned during a hearing in 2004, i.e. exactly  three days after Iranian authoritiesmysteriouslyreturned Forsat’sflight back to Canada, saying that “you pressed your nose against the door of the airport in Tehran [and were rejected].”Forsatwas sent to Iran due to a deportation order prompted by his “serious criminality.”

Forsatwas born in 1978and raised in Iran, he was almost ten years old when his family migrated to Canada as refugees, soon after which he was granted permanent-resident status along with his family. By the age of 19, Forsat had already overstayed his welcome as he got involved in numerous crimes, including a violent armed robbery. He currently rests in a detention centre of Quebec due to the charges of breaking into a home, located 55 kilometres north of Montreal, and assaulting a woman only six weeks after he was released into the custody of a friend.
