Majority of the schools in St. John’s and neighboring areas of eastern Newfoundland have decided to close for at least part of the day on Thursday, due to a serious warning by Environment Canada, which announced the possibility of a gigantic blizzard to envelop the areas in as much as 70 centimetres of snow on Friday. The Eastern School District preemptively closed the schools in the morning, while St. John’s schools was closing for the afternoon.

Meteorologists are expecting that this huge blizzard can lay from 40 to of 70 centimetres of snow till Friday evening. The blizzard will start showing signs of arrival as soon as Thursday as a small snowfall is expected to begin in the afternoon, which will be followed by successively larger amounts of snowfall in coming hours. Ryan Snoddon, an experience meteorologist, alleged that “this is going to be a full-on storm tonight and right through the day tomorrow.” He further elaborated that the roads will be “an absolute mess” by Thursday evening, which will quite presumably worsen over time as the winds get stronger till Friday morning. He added that “It’s going to be a nasty day. There’s no other way to put it.”

The director of public works, Paul Mackey, stated that the blizzard is apparently going to be extremely powerful, hence dealing with the snow will be a challenge. He advice general public to “stay home if you don’t need to be out.” He also warned that  “It may be a while before some streets see a plow.”
