The Ontario Labour Relations Board announcement the decision, after a long hearing of nearly 13 hours, almost around 4 a.m. in the morning, that the elementary teachers’ one-day strike is illegal. Hence now all Schools in the GTA region will remain open today as usual.
The schools in region of Toronto, York, Peel, Durham and Halton boards will remain open on Friday. The bus service of Toronto and York students has been cancelled, although the bus service of Durham and Peel will be working, with exception of Caledon due to weather conditions. Toronto police has cautioned public to remain careful as there will be fewer crossing guards on the streets.
The President of Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, Sam Hammond, commented on the decision saying that he is indeed disappointed on the union’s decision, but will still respect and obey it. He stated to expect teachers to show up for work on Friday. The protests, which will not happen, was planned outside the Ministry of Education and the offices of the provincial Liberal leadership candidates. Hammond alleged that “we will be complying with all of the orders” and “we will be directing our members to report to work tomorrow … it has been a very difficult day but this is the process where we feel these types of decisions should be made.” Hammond asserted to have planned to consult legal counsel in the coming days for deciding whether to appeal or not.
