There is still pure ambiguity over the matter of attendance at today’s much-anticipated and highly-controversial meeting among federal officials and First Nations leaders. Prime Minister’s office has confirmed that PM Stephen Harper will be present at the meeting today, even though aboriginal chiefs still have not made a unanimous decision among themselves. The statement of Prime Minister alleges  that “as far as we are concerned, the meeting with Chief Atleo and native leaders is going ahead at the Prime Minister’s offices in the Langevin Building at noon.”

Real matter of confusion arises among the attendance of aboriginal chiefs on working session of Friday, as top chiefs from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories support Attawapiskat Chief, Theresa Spence, who has refused to attend working session until PM is joined by Gov-Gen David Johnston. Spence claims that Johnston’s was the key person during the vital talks that took place for treaty rights, that were first established by the Royal Proclamation of 1793.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Chief of Assembly of First Nations National, Shawn Atleo, aimed the meeting to initiate a “transformative change” between Canada’s First Nations and the federal government. He stated that “this is the fork in the road” and “this is the moment of reckoning and the tipping point that for so long we’ve said was coming.” Gov. Gen. has announced to hold a separate ceremonial meeting after Friday’s working session, about which many top aboriginal leaders demand Johnston to participate during the working session.
