Martin Cauchon, former cabinet minister, has made a dramatic last minute entry in the long-list of federal Liberal leadership candidates. Cauchon presented his documentation for nomination, along with the entry fee of $75,000, when only an hour was left for the party’s registration deadline, i.e. Sunday midnight.
Considering that Cauchon turns out to be eligible and is affirmatively verified by the party within a day or two, he will be the ninth candidate for leading the Liberal party out of political wilderness. He is anticipated to soon inaugurate his campaign within a week, which will also allow him to participate in the first leadership debate in Vancouver on Sunday. Cauchon has a strong portfolio, since during his tenure as justice minister he engineered decriminalizing marijuana and legalized same-sex marriages. He will most likely pose to be a solution of the party’s problems and promise to bring progress to the party.
He entered a dispute with front-runner Justin Trudeau before Christmas as he called the Chretien-era long-gun registry a failure, while alleging that leadership contenders will become “backbone” to bring back traditional Liberal principles. Cauchon gave up politics back in 2004, whereas his return in 2011 was let down in Montreal riding by Tom Mulcair. Cauchon will be the third candidate of Liberal leadership who belongs to Quebec, including Trudeau and fellow Montreal MP Marc Garneau. Cauchon is a well respected and honorable member of the party, especially by the Chretien loyalists. The contest will end with an election of a new leader on April 14.
