Our sources have found out the story of a Hamilton man, Mark Gowland, who has been accompanying Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence’s hunger strike as he left his own life behind for the purpose. 26-years-old Gowland has been assisting Chief Spence since the beginning of her hunger strike, i.e. Dec. 11, as she seeks asylum in an aboriginal education centre on Victoria Island on the Ottawa River. Apart from the few justified holidays of Christmas, Gowland has been at Spence’s side everyday throughout the ongoing period of protest.
Spence has set out a clear demand since day one to summon a meeting with both Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, and Gov. Gen., David Johnston, on the agenda of discussing so-called “treaty issues” between First Nations and the Crown. Gowland admitted on media while giving a phone interview from Ottawa that “It’s been unreal.” He alleged that “In the beginning, I didn’t even know she was doing this. I had no idea.” Growland shared that even when Spence’s strike was not made public, he was totally convinced and prepared to travel to Ottawa for camping out in front of Parliament in protest of Bill C-38 and Bill C-45, as they made considerable alterations to Canada’s take on many environmental issues.
Gowland gave up his job at the Green Smoothie Bar on James Street North and headed for Ottawa. Soon after he winded up becoming a part of Spence’s protest after meeting the Attawapiskat chief. He added that “from then on out, I just thought — I’m just going to help this lady with whatever.” He alleged that “I just showed up, and I never left.”
