The negotiations in order to find a solution of Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence’s nearly six-week-long hunger strike have started approaching towards a solutions in the past 48 hours, concealed sources aware of the negotiations confirm. Chief Spence has been surviving on nothing but fish broth and medicinal tea since Dec. 11, and now multiple sources have confirmed that she is attempting to find a way out for returning to her community and begin taking care of her health.

The government has sent a delegation, including interim Liberal leader Bob Rae and northern Ontario deputy grand chief Alvin Fiddler, for negotiating with Chief Spence to find an agreeable and respectful solution of the deadlock. Rae has a good repute as a firm but approachable and respectful mediator in uneasy situations like these, whereas Fiddler belongs the to the same region as Spence, hence will be able to provide tactically practical proposals. Spence’s delegation includes, along with herself, two of her confidantes who helping in the negations to find a solution and draft a declaration of the chief’s apprehensions to be signed by supporters.

Sources, who have chosen to remain anonymous because of the fragile nature of discussions, are showing complete faith that a resolution will be agreed soon, expectedly on Thursday. Chief Spence and the Assembly of First Nations have also requested Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov.-Gen. David Johnston to host a broad meeting with the country’s chiefs, partly to commemorate the first anniversary of last year’s Crown-First Nation Gathering on Thursday.
