A Twin Otter plane operated by Calgary’s Kenn Borek Air Ltd. has gone missing, with three Canadians on-board,  over an Antarctic mountain range. Reports confirm that search and rescue mission is already underway. An official statement from the airline company confirmed that the plane was categorized as overdue early Wednesday.

The statement said that “the aircraft was repositioning from the South Pole Station to Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, carrying three Canadian crew members.” It explained that the “search and rescue efforts are being hampered by weather conditions.” A Transportation Safety Board of Canada official, Chris Krepski, confirmed that his organization has been informed of the incident on Wednesday, while verifying that it was a repositioning flight with three crew members on board. The official statement has not confirmed the identity of any of the three men aboard, although some unconfirmed sources informed media outlets that the pilot was named Bob Heath. Heath’s friend, Anthony Szekely, described him as a “tremendous training pilot” and a veteran polar navigator. He added that “for his sake and his family’s sake, we hope he’s coming back.”

Heath’s landline phone was answered by a woman who refused to comment on the situation, while referring to contact Kenn Borek Air’s Calgary office. The ongoing search and rescue mission is being conducted with complete coordination of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand. It has been confirmed that an emergency locator transmitter is being traced and is believed to be coming from the northern end of the Queen Alexandra Range, about 450 kilometres from the south pole.
