At approximately 11:15 p.m. on Friday night, two motor vehicles were observed going over 160 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The two vehicles were following each other with less than 15 feet separating them. The rear vehicle then pulled up next to the other vehicle as if in a race. The two vehicles maintained this position over a distance of more than 2.5 kilometers before being intercepted by police.
There were five passengers in one vehicle and two in the other vehicule. They were all between 16 and 24 years old. The two drivers will face charges of dangerous driving. They will appear in Provincial Court in Tracadie-Sheila, N.B. on September 8, 2010.
The RCMP would like to remind the public that dangerous driving and car racing can have deadly consequences and will not be tolerated. "People who drive dangerously can face very heavy fines. They can lose their license and even go to jail," said Cpl. Marc Beaupré of the Acadian Peninsula Street Crime Unit. "Too many people are killed on our highways as a result of negligent driving. These deaths can be prevented."
The investigation is ongoing and other charges may be laid against the two drivers.
