NDP Leader Andrea Horwath began work on Wednesday by determining a list of demands in case she was to allege support for the incoming premier Kathleen Wynne’s minority Liberal government. Wynne was elected on Saturday, and will now soon be assuming office duties and form a cabinet to take power.
Horwath has announced that she wants the upcoming spring budget to declare at least $1 billion in corporate tax loopholes, set up an on-the-job training program for youth and allow welfare people that are finding jobs to keep more before they start to pay off. The change in welfare system has previously been recommended in a key report on social assistance reform last year, and it is highly supported by the Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak. In fact, Wynne has also hinted at an occasion that she “likes that idea,” while concluding youth unemployment to be a priority issue. Howrath mentioned during a press conference that “we have a real opportunity to get things done here.” She attributed her to-do list to be nothing but “achievable proposals that will make a real difference,” provided a scenario where Ontario is entangled in a deficit of $11.9 billion, has more than 15.7 per cent of youth jobless rate, and requires more people out of its welfare program and into jobs.
On the other hand, Tory MPP Rob Leone alleged that “as 2011 campaign co-chair for the Liberals Kathleen Wynne was involved in the decision to save five Liberal seats by cancelling the Oakville and Mississauga gas plants.” Leone added that “with complete disregard for taxpayers, Wynne treated public funds as if they belonged to the Liberal Party and now taxpayers are left with the bill.”
