The association of patients suffering from rare skin diseases, especially Pemphigus and Pemphigoid, have seemingly become very hopeful that the decision of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, to openly discuss his health condition, will aid in raising public awareness about the health condition. One of the very first patient of the disease, Dan Goodwill, who was treated almost around 20 years ago and is now living symptom-free since 1999, admitted that it was a difficult venture to locate a high-profile Canadian who has the disease.
Mr. Goodwill works as a volunteer chair of the Canadian Pemphigus and Pemphigoid Foundation, i.e. a non-profit charity organization working since in 2008. He admitted that “If he would share his story… If he’d be able to help us in any way, it would be much appreciated.” He explained that “I’d be very delighted if he would speak out, just to help bring attention to the illness and the challenges that people face.”
Mr. Goodwill further elucidated that “as a very high profile person, we’ve been searching for somebody like that in Canada… but we’ve never found anybody anywhere near as high-profile as Mr. Flaherty… There’s no shame in it or anything like that, it’s an illness and it’s very treatable. And with good help with his doctors he should be able to bring it into remission, so there’s no cause for alarm.” The said diseases are extremely uncommon, due to which, there is barely any data available with Statistics Canadian to elaborate on how many Canadian are living with the condition.
