Approximately 75 witnesses are anticipated to record their testimonies in a public inquiry into last year’s Elliot Lake mall collapse, which resulted in death of two women along with several injured from northern Ontario community. The inquiry will commence on Monday with an opening statement from Commissioner Paul Belanger. It is scheduled to proceed for the next four weeks after Tuesday.

The inquiry has been commenced almost eight months after the roof of the Algo Centre Mall collapsed, resulting in death of 37-year-old Lucie Aylwin and 74-years-old Doloris Perizzolo. Families of the victims are pursuing to sue several parties for the death of their loved ones. Speaking on behalf of both families, lawyer Roger Oatley, informed The Canadian Press that “we’re looking forward to the evidence that establishes who’s at fault.” He added that “armed with the evidence that we hear and see at the inquiry, we will know at whom we should be pointing the finger in our lawsuit.”

The inquiry will investigate that whether the overhead garage of Algo Centre Mall was appropriately designed and well constructed before it collapsed on June 23, 2012. Additionally, it will probe if the mall’s owners had sufficiently attended maintenance issues of the structure, that was built in 1982, and the response of emergency and rescue teams that followed after the collapse. Majority residents of the community are hoping that the inquiry will at least give them some closure following the tragic event. A former employee of Algo Centre Mall, Everal Longworth, stated that “It’s kind of bittersweet to see (the mall) coming down.”
