This Monday, almost around its closing time, Vancouver Apple Store was visited by bear spray using thieves that stormed into the store while targeting roughly 40 customers with the caustic spray before fleeing with an unconfirmed quantity of iPods, iPads and laptops.

A statement from Vancouver Police confirmed that the attack occurred just before 7 p.m., while approximately 40 customers were present in the store. It was further revealed that five of those customers were given urgent treatment by paramedics for exposure to the chemical, whose active ingredient is derived from cayenne peppers. The Vancouver Police K9 units were close and arrived on the crime scene soon after the attack. The authorities were unable to find three males suspects, along with a considerate quantity of products concealed by the men when they made their escape. The three suspects allegedly fled in car.

Even hours after the attack, the corridors of Oakridge Mall, i.e. the oldest mall in Vancouver, were still thick with the odor of the spray. At a White Spot within sight of crime, staff reported being unaware of a robbery, but called mall security when customers became overwhelmed by the pungent smell. Into the night, a Vancouver Police forensics team remained at the scene to reconstruct the sudden encounter. The store only had comparatively less products available at grabbing distance for thieves, since majority of the product were kept in hidden storage rooms behind closed doors. Vancouver Police wrote that the thieves stole only “a small number of electronics.”
