The speaker of Ontario’s parliament has ruled that the Liberal government did not intentionally deceive the legislature over the release of documents of the two highly notorious and expensive gas-fired power plants. The government was widely accused of cancelling the plants, in Mississauga and Oakville, and using it only as a move for winning more seats in the area during the 2011 election.
Last year, the opposition forced the government into publicly showing the documents of energy ministry in relations to the cancellations. In the initial installment of documents released in September, Liberal ministers alleged that complete documentation have been made public. However, only a month later, it was announced that an approx. 20,000 more pages of papers were mistakenly left out in the first release and hence are being shared now. The government alleged that the documents released now were accidentally overlooked during the first search, whereas on the other hand, the opposition pointed finger at the Liberals for covering up something else. Progressive Conservative MPP Todd Smith accused the government of misleading the House and moved to have the government found in contempt of parliament.
Speaker of the parliament, Dave Levac, confirmed on Tuesday that no evidence has been established to support that the government has done anything nefarious. Mr. Levac stated that “I accept that [the false statements] were believed to be true at the time, not made with the intention of misleading the House and corrected at the earliest opportunity.”
