The spokesperson of Coast Guards stated that it took precisely 23 minutes duration from the initiation of a mayday call and the Richmond-based rescue hovercraft to reach its point of origin and identify the situation of two men aboard a sinking vessel near Point Grey, off the west side of Vancouver. It was affirmed that all crewmembers are safe and the vessel, which was a fishing boat, has now sunk underwater in the Strait of Georgia, almost 5 kilometres from the nearest shore.
It was official shared by The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria that a mayday call was received at 5:15 a.m. PT, immediately after which a number of coast guard and RCMP vessels and commercial boats were already racing towards its origin. At the time when the first boat, i.e. a tugboat, arrived at the scene, it reported a 18-metre fishing boat had already sunk. Whereas, the spokesperson of Canadian Coast Guard, Dan Bates, adds that the two men were also identified to be floating in the water at the time.
Bates stated that “there were two people in the water. They had tied rubber fenders from the boat and had lifejackets on. The boat had at that point, disappeared from the water.” He added that “a coast guard swimmer was dispatched and brought both men on board the hovercraft where they were treated for hypothermia.” There has been no confirmation regarding the reason why the fishing boat had sunk.
