A community mourns on Thursday afternoon due to the shocking death of a five-year-old girl, who passed away after being hit by a garbage truck in Toronto’s east end. An informal memorial was arranged, containing teddy bears, cards and flowers, for Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger on Friday at the site of collision, i.e. near Cliffside Drive and East Haven Drive.
Whereas, the five-year-olds’ school, Cliffside Public School, kept the flag lower to half-mast while teachers wore white ribbons in her remembrance of their student. On the other hand, parents were full of tears as they attempted to explain the incident to their children. Mother of one child, Nicole Kavanaugh, stated that her daughter was awake all night, sharing that “she was so upset last night,” and “she didn’t understand.” The accident took place on Thursday afternoon, when three children were hit by a city garbage truck, that was making a left turn, while crossing the road. Five-year-old girl Kayleigh was pronounced dead at the scene.
On the other hand, a 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy were quickly shifted to a nearby hospital, Sick Kids Hospital, to be treated with minor injuries from accident, while the fourth child travelling with them remained uninjured. The victim’s father, Jacob Callaghan, informed reporters at the memorial site on Friday morning, that Kayleigh was a “loving, beautiful girl” and “she didn’t deserve anything like this.” He alleged that he “can’t completely comprehend what happened.” Several residents were angered on Friday morning at the occasion when a city garbage truck crossed the child’s school while students were still arriving. Sharon Cooney, pointed out that “look at how slow it went, they never go like that. Never.”
