A Quebec victims group has expressed their support for Marc Cardinal Ouellet and are hoping to see him succeed Pope Benedict to become the next head of the Catholic Church. However, the reasons behind their support do not exactly speak highly of the 68-year-old cleric.
Several protesters, wearing white paper hats like the mitres worn by Bishops, assembled a small rally yesterday outside a Montreal church, chanting “vote for Ouellet.” The protestors at the rally included members of the Quebec Association of Victims, as it announced their support for the Quebec cardinal to become the next pontiff. The group has been, and still remains, highly critical of Ouellet for not taking severe enough action against the culprits and to safeguard those who were victimized by the church. Since the announcement of resignation by Pope Benedict last month, Ouellet has become one of the prime contenders to succeed Benedict.
While supporting the cardinal, the group does not exactly intends to portray that he is actually the best candidate for the job. However, it claims that in case Ouellet becomes the next pope, international attention will focus on Quebec and this will put the abuse suffered by their 3,500 members in the international spotlight. The spokesperson for the association, Carlo Tarini, stated that “we are not being facetious, we are all for his election as pope. What we hope is they [journalists] will note is the No. 1 problem with the Catholic Church which is the problem of pedophile priests. We want them to hear our claim that Quebec is a paradise for pedophile priests and how we knocked at [Ouellet’s] door in the past.”
