U.S. midfielder Carli Lloyd suffered a non-displaced greater tuberosity fracture of the left shoulder during the USA’s opening match of the 2013 Algarve Cup in Portugal. Lloyd left during the second half against Iceland on March 6 and was held out of the USA’s two other group games. An MRI revealed the break and Lloyd will be out of action for approximately 6-8 weeks. She will not need surgery.

Lloyd was allocated to Western New York Flash of the new National Women’s Soccer League, which begins play in April, but will likely miss at least the first month of the NWSL season.

“Although it’s an unfortunate circumstance, I’ve been through injuries before and have come back even stronger,” said Lloyd, who has played 154 times for the U.S. WNT. “I’m disappointed that I’ll be missing some National Team events and some league games, but as soon as my shoulder allows, I’ll be back and ready to compete.”

At the 2012 Olympics, Lloyd scored four goals, including both in the 2-1 victory against Japan in the gold medal game in front of more than 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in London. She has 43 career goals for the USA, third-most of any player in U.S. history who has played exclusively in the midfield.

The USA will play Group A champion Germany in the Algarve Cup Final on March 13 with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Estadio Algarve in Faro, Portugal.
