Saskatchewan’s NDP leader, Cam Broten, made an announcement on Wednesday openly declaring his support for the Keystone XL pipeline project, which is a stance in contradiction to his party’s federal leader, Tom Mulcair. Broten straightforwardly elaborated that “to clear the record … I support the Keystone XL pipeline because of a triple bottom line assessment looking at environmental, economic and social reasons.”
Broten was recently being criticized by Premier Brad Wall in the legislature for not openly expressing his support for the pipeline due to Mulcair’s inclination towards disapproving the project, and instead delaying to take a public stance due to a so-called pending approval from the National Energy Board. Wall revealed that an approval was received from the National Energy Board almost three years ago and urged that Broten shall “stand up” to Mulcair.
Upon inquiry on Wednesday, about how Broten’s support for the pipeline will impact his relationship with Mulcair, he boastfully stated that Saskatchewan is my priority. “Mulcair will make his comments,” he told the newspaper. He stated that “my job first and foremost is to stand up for Saskatchewan’s interests, to develop our resources in a sustainable and responsible manner, and that’s the approach that I’ll be taking and our caucus and party will be taking with me as leader.” Mulcair has been indicating all week long in Washington that the Canadian government has failed to retain its environmental record, a tactic that “betrays our country’s national interest” Wall tweeted on Wednesday.
