The Montreal police alleged that it intended to convey a strong message, during a raid on student demonstration on Tuesday night, that the rules of the game have changed. Among almost 60 protesters walking against traffic on St-Laurent Blvd. on Tuesday night, an estimate of 45 were hurdled and arrested, and released several hours later with standard fine of $637. A spokesperson for Montreal police, Ian Lafreniere, stated that “I’m not going to share our tactics, but we sent a strong message last Friday and yesterday. Enough is enough.”

After more than a year or so of leniency in the bylaw P-6, the controversial law was strictly practiced comprehensively on Tuesday. Technically, P-6 forbids people to wear masks during protests and asks them to be able to provide planned route to police. In violation of this law, police arrested the suspects under an existing warrant. Until the end of Friday’s protest, two groups were corralled and almost 250 people were detained and ticketed. Lafreniere elucidated on Friday evening, following the demonstration, that “this is not a normal protest, it has a bad history,” because “for the past 15 years this protest has almost always turned bad with riots and mass arrests.”

The spokesperson of police admitted that Friday’s reaction was a feature of a new strategy. It was added that “we established last week that it is possible to do a protest in Montreal without breaking anything, but you need to follow all the rules. If you don’t do that, you’ll receive a ticket and that’s what happened.”
