Mayor Rob Ford has responded to a recent allegation made in a Toronto Star story, claiming that he was battling alcohol abuse, labeling it as “an outright lie” without contesting any specifics in it. The comments were made by Ford at a ceremony in city hall on Tuesday, while he was presenting the “key to the city” to 75-years-old Canadian boxing legend, George Chuvalo, who now goes to schools to speak out against substance abuse which has plagued his family.
Responding to the story, Ford mentioned that “It’s an outright lie, it’s the Toronto Star going after me again and again and again,” while he also denied being “asked to leave” the Toronto Garrison Ball last month because organizers seemed concerned over the mayor’s condition. He alleged that “they’re relentless, that’s fine, I’ll go head to head with the Toronto Star any time.” Ford was inquired about what specifically in the story he was calling a lie, he replied that “let’s just wait until the election is and then we’ll see what happens.” Ford elaborated that “It’s just lies after lies and lies and I’ve called you pathological liars and you are so why don’t you take me to court. Let the courts decide. It’s about George Chuvalo today — have some respect.”
Soon before the event started, Ford’s press secretary, George Christopoulos, informed the reporters that “for the record, the mayor was not asked to leave the gala.” However, on the contrary, Councilor and chair of the government management committee and a strong ally of Ford, Paul Ainslie, reportedly alleged that “I urged the mayor’s chief of staff, Mark Towhey, to have the mayor leave the event.”
