A recent report confirms that minority Liberals of Premier Kathleen Wynne have decided to support the NDP Leader, Andrea Horwath, in his bid to lower auto rates. As a development which can prevent a spring election, Liberal MPPs are now allegedly prepared to support the motion of New Democrat MPP, Jagmeet Singh, on Wednesday asking Wynne’s government “to gradually reduce average, industry-wide, private passenger auto insurance premiums by 15 per cent.”

Keeping in mind that Singh’s opposition-day pitch in the legislature has a huge symbolic significance, the support of Liberals will result in substantial political significance ahead of next month’s budget. The New Democrats have already handed over a long list of demands to Wynne  in exchange for their support, one if which to cut the insurance rates that are especially burdensome for Greater Toronto motorists.

The Finance Minister, Charles Sousa, is scheduled to table his first budget in mid- to late April, as it was recently confirmed Tuesday on that “it’s in the interest of the public” to make rates fairer. Sousa once mentioned in an interview that “I’m looking at options as to how to make this work. I’m deliberating over how to do it.” Additionally, he added that “we will work towards finding ways to make the premiums come down. I welcome the opportunity to work with the (NDP) on this.” Furthermore, he pointed out that doing all this will require complete “cooperation with the industry.”
