The United Nations mentioned in a press statement released on Friday, that it is “regrettable” that Canada has decided to withdraw from a UN convention that fights the spread of droughts. Prior to that, Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, reportedly attributed that Canada has reached the decision of withdrawing from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification because it feels that the program has become too bureaucratic, and it is not worth the $350,000 contributed each year anymore.

The official statement on behalf of the convention was released by a Bonn-based secretariat on Friday, alleging that “the Convention is stronger than ever before, which makes Canada’s decision to withdraw from the Convention all the more regrettable.” An unannounced order of withdrawal was recommended by the Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, to the federal cabinet last week. Since its announcement, the decision of withdrawal has received overwhelming criticism in lieu of the Harper government from opposition parties, non-governmental aid agencies, civil society groups and former Canadian diplomats, including at least one former UN ambassador.

In the official statement released to the press by the secretariat, also known as the UNCCD, on Friday, it said that Canada only formally notified the convention on Thursday. The statement issued by UNCCD mentioned that “Canada, a country that is frequently subjected to drought and where 60 per cent of the cropland is in dry areas, is also a major actor in global efforts to address food security in developing countries.”
