British Columbia’s Coroners Service has revealed its finding in the death of a Polish immigrant, Robert Dziekanski, in an altercation with RCMP officers at Vancouver’s airport six years ago was a homicide. However, the coroner’s report distinguished that the word ‘homicide’ is being referred as a neutral term, implying that the death was caused by the actions of another person, and that it is not intended to imply any blame.

40-years-old Dziekanski was unable to speak English when he arrived at the airport in October 2007, and was left wandering for more than nine hours at the arrival area, which left him agitated and in confrontation with four Mounties who stunned him several times with a Taser. The incident was recorded on camera, after the video was released online, it resulted in an intensive public anger and invoked a public inquiry by the government under the supervision of former justice Thomas Braidwood.

The report of coroner, Patrick Cullinane, stated that “the finding of Mr. Justice Braidwood was that Mr. Dziekanski died as a result of a cardiac arrhythmia.” It alleged that “he also found that both the multiple deployments of the conducted energy weapon along with the physical altercation contributed to the circumstance leading to the fatal arrhythmia. I concur with the findings of Mr. Justice Braidwood.” The report also clarified that no other factors were involved in the death. It mentioned that “[the] autopsy showed no significant injuries and no natural disease process that would have likely led to sudden death.”
