Evacuation Warning Continues for Cranberry Portage in Manitoba

As a result of continued heavy smoke from forest fires, Manitoba Conservation advises that an evacuation warning for Cranberry Portage remains in effect, however, progress was made fighting the fire north of the town and no new fires broke out yesterday in the north.

The Kisseynew Lake fire has grown to approximately 45,000 hectares, due to ongoing dry conditions and strong winds. Work to protect camps, cottages and cabins in the area continues with the assistance of the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

There are 39 firefighting crews, 11 helicopters, eight water bombers and other heavy equipment being used in fighting this fire.  Manitoba’s efforts have been supplemented by water bombers, support aircraft and fire crews from Ontario, B.C. and Minnesota.

Due to smoke concerns, the campground at Bakers Narrows Provincial Park is closed and parks staff are contacting customers in advance to cancel reservations and offer alternative arrangements for campgrounds, such as at Clearwater Lake Provincial Park, closer to The Pas.
