After months of campaigning and aggressive debate on the verdict of a downtown Toronto casino resort, the issue is expected to reach a final decisive answer on May 21. Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford has called on a special council meeting on that date just for the sake of debating the casino. Council is scheduled to debate a report by the city manager, Joe Pennachetti, at its next planned monthly council meeting on next Tuesday and Wednesday.

At risk of another major loss at council, Ford is counting on his colleagues not to reject the massive downtown casino resort near the downtown waterfront, which he claims will bring along thousands of good-paying jobs, new revenue for the city and badly needed convention space. On the other hand, the council opponents, along with grassroots opposition of the No Casino Toronto group, have dismissed such claims as hype being maintained by the large number of lobbyists hired by Nevada-based casino giants, and also doubt that the social and economic harm would far outweigh any benefits.

Recent surveys allege that councillors are of the impression that downtown casino is a long-shot. Even Ford’s own executive committee remained confused on the casino issue, as it recently voted 9-4 to table the city manager’s report to council. Out of those who voted with Ford have asserted that their support is almost 50 percent conditional, stating that it is necessary that Toronto receives a hosting fee of at least $100 million per year. It is possible that Councillors might know the hosting fee Toronto is expected to receive from Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp by May 21.
