MSN Hackers Plead guilty to Fraud Charges in St. John’s NL

Two residents of Kelowna, British Columbia have plead guilty to multiple charges of Fraud that originated from the RNC Economic Crime Unit.

Between February 2008 and July 2009, officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Economic Crime Unit, investigated twelve separate reports of MSN Hackers targeting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians by accessing their personal MSN accounts. The Hackers successfully obtained control over the victims’ e-mail accounts and proceeded to send messages to friends and family members on their contact lists, requesting money be sent to a bank account in British Colombia. In total, the hackers defrauded the victims of approximately $8,000 -10,000.

Through the course of the investigation, the RNC Economic Crime Unit determined that the suspects were residing in Kelowna British Colombia and contacted the RCMP Fraud Section to collaborate on the investigation. With the assistance of the RNC investigators, the Kelowna RCMP Fraud Investigator successfully located and charged a twenty-two year old male and a female young offender for fraudulent offences throughout Canada totaling tens of thousands of dollars. Both accused individuals have recently plead guilty to the charges in British Columbia.
