Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, alleged in front of a public audience at Quebec City that he’s fed up of old constitutional battles encircling him his entire life. In his first official visit to Quebec City since the controversial allegations were laid against the Supreme Court of Canada justices of having interfered in the patriation of the Constitution. Harper was inquired by reporters to comment on the growing controversy, to which he replied that his government’s priority is the economy of the 21st century and not the constitutional disputes of the 1980s.

These unusual allegations were laid in a recently published book of a historian and journalist, Frederic Bastien, in which he writes that the chief justice of the Supreme Court at the time, Bora Laskin, deceptively provided information to the Canadian and British governments on the discussions between the justices about the legality of repatriation. Both the federal New Democrats and Quebec provincial parties have recently been pressuring the ruling Conservatives to unveil the documents concerning the alleged misconduct. Consequently, the Supreme Court announced to have launched an internal investigation into the accusations and later reported to have found nothing to support the claim.

The 1982 patriation of the Constitution have always remained a controversial issue in Quebec, whose separatist government of the day felt betrayed by other provinces. At the time, Quebec was the only province to have refused to endorse or acknowledge the document. Harper was visiting Quebec City today to announce his new 55 clean-energy projects in the region.

  1. So Harper is fed up hey, so are we. There is a simple fix but ever since the one that created the problem in the first place, Trudeau, no one has the kahonies to do what has to be done. There is no such thing as initiating a new act or bill of rights without the inclusion of previous agreements. The BNA Act guaranteed certain rights and priveleges to Canadians in general and Quebecoers in particular. Trudeaus document doesn’t address those rights 100%. You simply can’t ignore prior agreements, charters, constitutional rights and obligation and incorporate a new act without consegeuence. The rest of Canada should really thank Quebec for their steadfastness in refusing to sign a document that does not provcomment_IDe for the rights and committments of the prvious documents. I can guarentee you that not 15% of the Canadian population is/was aware of their rights and priveleges under the BNA Act and even more are ignorant of their rights with our repatriated constitution and the worse document our so called Charter of Rights. Harper can solve the problems by growing somre kahonies and righting what was done wrong.

  2. Harper states he’s fed up?What a joke. The whole country’s fed up with HIM.Worst Canadian leader(MISNOMER) in History of leaders in Canada.Do us all a favor,If your so fed up I invite you to quit.2/3 of all Canadians will not lose much sleep
