An internal meeting of Nova Scotia NDP supporters finished at Halifax on Saturday with discrete sounds of a protest in the background, as a group of demonstrators spoke against the handling of  Rehtaeh Parsons case by the province’s justice system. An estimate of 20 protesters indulged in chanting and drumming outside the hall in Halifax, where the federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair was delivering a speech to the provincial party preparing for an election.

The family of 17-year-old Rehtaeh claims that the teen committed suicide last month because she was previously sexually assaulted by four teens and a photo of the incident was circulated in her school. After the meeting was over, Mulcair and Marilyn More held a small private meeting with the protesters. Mulcair promised to consider the demands of protestors and search whether there are other legislative approaches that can be taken in the case. While holding the Conservatives responsible for dragging their feet in changing the Criminal Code to include laws against cyberbullying, Mulcair mentioned that “(I will) try and listen to see if there are some aspects of the legal side and parliamentary side that we hadn’t thought of.”

More, who is also the minister nominated by Nova Scotia to investigate the province’s response to Rehtaeh’s case, alleged that she had agreed to meet with the group in a month for discussing the progress of an independent review of how the Halifax Regional School Board responded. She added that there will also be a separate review of the RCMP’s original investigation after the current probe is over.
